Makhila Ainciart Bergara are traditional Basque walking sticks, handcrafted for over 200 years and across seven generations in our workshop. Each piece, made of medlar wood, leather, and metals (brass, nickel silver, silver), is unique, custom-made, and bears the owner’s last name, first name, and motto. A symbol of Basque artisanal expertise, the workshop holds the EPV (Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant) certification and is recognized by UNESCO as a rare art form. The journey of discovery into the makhila begins at the exhibition space across from the workshop. A ten-minute film, along with panels detailing the object’s history and the various stages of production, serve as an introduction to the workshop tour, where visitors can watch the artisans at work.
