Eugene Ionesco, with The Bald Singer was not only critical of the Boulevard theatre that was being performed in Paris in 1950, but also of its society. For him it was a Parody. The characters in the play are incapable of communicating with each other. They are like dolls locked in life. Neither the six characters involved, nor the scenic elements have the slightest hint of reality. It was the first play to be considered within the genre of the absurd.
