David Murray; Joe Lovano & Julian Lage
David Murray Quartet David Murray (tenor saxophone, clarinet), Marta Sanchez (piano), Luke Stewart (double bass), Russell Carter (drums), Francesca Cinelli (vocals) For over fifty years, David Murray has been shaping the sound of modern Jazz: bold, creative, rooted in tradition, but always pushing boundaries. Since his arrival in New York in 1975, David Murray has established himself as one of the foremost saxophonists and leaders in Jazz. He has released over 200 albums under his own name, collaborating with artists such as Max Roach, Randy Weston, Pharoah Sanders, McCoy Tyner, Taj Mahal, Mal Waldron, Amiri Baraka, Jerry Garcia, Doudou N'daye Rose, Cassandra Wilson, Jason Moran, Macy Gray, Omara Portuondo, Saul Williams, Vijay Iyer, Quest Love, Black Thought and Gregory Porter, to name a few. He is also a founding member of the groundbreaking World Saxophone Quartet, which has toured and recorded for 40 years. Now, at the age of 70, he is opening a new chapter with his current quartet, contributing to the rise of critically acclaimed young talent: Marta Sanchez on piano, Luke Stewart on double bass and Russell Carter on drums, a concentration of virtuosity and creativity. The quartet's first album, Francesca (2024), confirmed that Murray is not resting on his laurels. Critics hailed it as one of the best jazz albums of the year (The New York Times, Downbeat, Jazzwise, Slate and many others), confirming the creative vitality of the legendary saxophonist. Now the line-up returns with a new work, Birdly Serenade (2025). Recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio, following in Coltrane's footsteps, the album is inspired by birds and the natural world. Critics unanimously agree that David Murray is at the peak of his career: - "The legend David Murray is back with the next generation of genius." (Washington Post) -The result feels like quintessential Murray". (The New York Times) -" Francesca shows David Murray in full possession of magic". (Slate) - "The austere and irrepressible soloist, as creative and inspired as in his best days, but with a halo of maturity".
