Abusu (a.k.a. La Peña — same thing) is the Bilbao neighbourhood across the river that throws itself into its fiestas like few others. No frills here: txosnas (neighbourhood drink stands), fiercely contested paella competitions, brass bands, rock gigs, parading giants and pintxo-pote for as long as your legs hold out. The perfect plan if you want real neighbourhood fiestas away from the tourist trail, where they'll treat you like a regular by your second beer. Getting there: the district hugs the river, south of central Bilbao. Easiest is the Cercanías train (La Peña stop) or the Bilbobus; parking during the fiestas is an extreme sport, so leave the car behind. Almost everything is free and outdoors.
