Alarde de San Marcial

Every 30 June, Irun celebrates its biggest day. Thousands of locals march in companies dressed in period military uniforms and fire gunpowder salutes until the whole town smells of smoke: this is the Alarde de San Marcial, commemorating the 1522 victory. It sets off around 17:10 from Plaza Urdanibia, after the floral offering on Mount San Marcial. If you've never seen it, arrive early: the centre fills up and it's worth getting a spot in advance.
