Chantal Sore, woman and painter. The originality and richness of Chantal Sore’s painting stem from the fact that, before learning to paint, she learned to live. There is no pictorial creation “ex nihilo”; one paints only what one has already seen, glimpsed, or dreamed of. In her images of simple intimacy, imbued with tenderness or a subtle cruelty, Chantal tells stories of women, motherhood, and dreams populated by a bestiary of children’s tales or nightmarish fantasies. Florence Levi was immersed from a very young age in the traditional values of rural France. In a loving environment and with modest means, she creates her own world through drawing, which becomes a refuge and an escape from a daily life that can sometimes feel burdensome—a life she finds illuminated by wanderings through soothing nature or in the company of silent, understanding pets.
